Lund University was the most pro-nazi university in Sweden during the second world war. Even though it’s been 80 years, our university still has not been able to reconcile with its controversial past. Lund University has had quite a few active nazis employed since then. If bold, one could even suggest that Lund University is a place where they thrive.
Sverker Oredsson, author of Lunds universitet under andra världskriget- Motsättningar, debatter och hjälpinsatser, describes Lund University as the most pro-nazi university in Sweden during the 30’s and 40’s. Professors were members of pro-nazi associations (such as Riksföreningen Sverige-Tyskland), and when Adolf Hitler rose to power in the 1930s they openly expressed their excitement for the new political order.
The students were no different in their nazi affections. In 1938 there was even a proposal to grant Swedish resident permits to ten German Jewish physicians. This was to be voted on by the student unions in both Lund and Uppsala, but ultimately the proposal was rejected based on the reasoning that “an immigration that entails the introduction of foreign elements into our population appears to us to be damaging and indefensible for the future”. Students who openly dis played nazi sympathies through student unions were promoted to professors in various subjects post-war.
Even after the war, the university has employ ed active nazis. Not even when informed about their employees’ activism, or the safety concerns of staff and students due to it, has any action been taken.
Rune Söderlund was an associate professor and lecturer at the Centre for Theology and Re ligious Studies between 1987 and 2011. Throug hout his academic career, he was active in the November 30th movement. The group started organising yearly marches to commemorate the death of Karl XII in 1921, and has been led by nazis and other racists since the late 1980s. In 2005, Lundagård reported that students were critical that the institution wouldn’t require Rune to dis tance himself from nazism. The university claims that since Rune has not committed misconduct, they can not do anything.
In May 2025, antifa.st exposed that a member of Det fria Sverige, a nationalistic, antisemitic movement, is employed by Lund University. Lassemaja (as we like to call him) is a receptionist at the Centre for Languages and Literature (SOL). He is also active on X(Twitter) where he openly displays his views. There you can find his opinion on women in universities;
“It’s tragic: young and fertile women who chase a bachelor’s and master’s in order to then cha se a career and a worry-free single life. That they can’t see that the biggest gift they can give is to bear children. They have the ability to create life. We need to upgrade motherhood.”
He has also retweeted articles by famous Nazis, about how to best organize the Nationalistic youth (in regard to the four young members of the AktivKlubb who went around beating people up in Stockholm in August). He also tweeted complaints about being called a nazi, a photo from a lecture held at the university, and much more.
When students emailed their concerns about Lassemaja, they received the response that the university cannot control what its employees do outside working hours. Moreover, Lund University views informing others about Lassemaja’s views through flyers or posters as defamation as well as a threat to his work environment. What is not taken into consideration, though, is the work environment of students and other employees at the institution. When we contacted the university about the issue they forwarded us to the student health centre.
Once again, Lund University not only actively employs nazis, but also silences and disregards the fears felt by students. Although, as we have observed in the university’s recent reactions to other concerns raised by students (such as the university’s ties to Israel) one can be less than surprised that the university is sympathetic to genocidal ideologies.
