Dante’s pub crawl is a tradition in Lund that involves going to the bars Inferno, Purgatorio and Paradis to recreate Dante’s journey in the Divina Commedia.
Inferno
A Lund staple with lots of space both inside and outside. Almost always perfectly full of people – you will find a seat, but the atmosphere will still be cozy and inviting. The evening Dacke was there, a live band was playing folk music, which was very much appreciated and added to the medieval vintage vibe the place has going on! On the drink front, Inferno does well; however, their main issue is the lack of fries on the menu. The reviewer’s educated opinion is that Inferno tries to lean more into the restaurant-bar vibe by opting for the far more miserable potato wedge. Potato wedges can be good, even great, but these were just lukewarm, dry, and limp. Seemingly having sat in a food warmer for multiple hours, they reminded the reviewer of school lunches rather than a comforting pub snack. Inferno’s sauce of choice is a very citrusy bearnaise – presumably homemade, and although a bit more fun than regular bearnaise, it takes away the last remainder of hope for the wedges to be a comfort dish. Nothing about this is heavy, oily or creamy.
The house red was on the sour side but still enjoyable.
Purgatorio
Purgatorio is Inferno’s beer-focused sibling. Here it’s a bit more hippie-bro-esque, less cosy and more industrial. Nonetheless, the namesake “Purgatorio” beer is very inoffensive, and the selection of beers on tap is interesting and unique. Regarding potato snacks, we were elated to find regular fries on the menu. They were freshly made, crispy, and altogether tasty. With the fries we were served two different sauces, an okay aioli and a ketchup with the added flair of tarragon.
The house red was pretty sweet, with notes of plum and chocolate, altogether nicer and with a deeper flavour than Inferno’s.
Paradis
When Dacke arrived at Paradis, no one was feeling like drinking or eating anything, and therefore we have nothing more to say than that as a pool place Paradis is fine – you can play pool (albeit it quite expensively at a rate of 60 sek/person per hour). The specific evening Dacke was here, there was also a very drunk old man who was harassing women, which made Paradis feel less like paradise and more like hell. Altogether fine, will have to go back to verify the claim that this incident was very unusual for the place.
The house red was not tasted.
